Significance of early STEM-education
IFIA Youth Network Manager, Mr. Winfried Sturm, participates in IFIA international invention exhibitions in various member states and promotes the culture of invention and innovation among the youth by organizing workshops and seminars either at schools or alongside the events.
For over 40 years I’ve been involved with nature-scientific school-activities. That’s why I know the importance of an early education in Science, Technology, Engeneering and Maths (STEM). All these 4 fields of activity are the fundamentals for every nation’s future worldwide. We need engineers who are able to use their brain capability to create innovative inventions. He says:
As such, we have to focus on “The effect of creativity on youth” in whereas the emphasis is placed on the importance of inborn creativity and their continuously strengthening. The aim is to encourage motivation among children and adolescents, to sharpen their communication skills and to raise awareness for the development of innovative ideas.
The future requires innovative thinking visionaries whose creativity must not be wasted since all nations need highly trained scientists and engineers. Thus, required innovative ideas and impulses should be detected, amplified and fed into the creative minds of young thinkers and inventors at an early age.
Training, education and skills of young people belong to the most important resources of our society and are essentially linked with managing the complex problems of the future. To achieve this, the focus needs to be directed towards the recognition and promotion of creativity among children, with the aim of consistent strengthening and development among adolescents.
Creativity is an inborn talent. Everyone is creative and has the right to promote his individual abilities. Creativity exists in the cradle and must be recognized. Human closeness, security, love, affection, understanding and appreciation are of great importance in the realization of this goal. In the adolescent development we should promote self-consciousness, permit mistakes, and encourage thinking outside the box. Inexperience is a creative source that needs to be used as child-limitless potential.
If we consider the fantastic manner in which our brain is organized during the first years with more than 100 millions nervecells (neurons), each other connected with nearly 1500 synapses – totally more than all stars in our Milky Way galaxy – then it will be understandable that parents have to care for a well-directed breeding and a special focused school education.
Children open up their “world” through ignorance with its own logic and experience: children demystify the magic spontaneously, have answers which amaze adults. The more childlike ideas often are outside existing standards and do not limit their creative idea horizon. The wonderful thing about children’s creativity is inexhaustible source bubbling idea creation. Parents are the main promoters of early childhood creativity, later school, education, environment, and institutions.
In my function as an active IFIA-Youth-Network-Manager I see my commitment to motivate students on their way to open their mind for STEM, to explore and strenghten their creativity. In order to reach this goals I offer my support in very country where I participated at IFIA-supported invention fairs to visit schools offering my over 40-years STEM-experience as an up to now engaged retired teacher and an international Ambassador of Science and Education. In former times I visited a lot of schools e.g. in China, Thailand, Taiwan, Province of China, Turkey, Ireland at last several high-schools during IFIA-event “IIIF-2017” in Visakhapatnam, India.
My special focus is to build a bridge between worldwide nations and their youth to overcome barriers of different culture, religion and education because we have only one earth and we have to share our world in a peaceful life to overcome the wordlwide challenges.
In order to achieve these aims I suggest the students how to find the right way for sucessful learning. I also encourage them to become an inventor and care about trendsetting ideas for realizing these into innovative inventions.
Conclusion: In all countries the feedback of the visited schools was overwhelming. Both students and teacher were very interested to learn new experiences of forward-looking education and to get information on how to become a successful inventor. Especially the youth could be motivated to find a possible way leaving the traditional education career with a marginal future outllook. Especially the young students in poor Asian countries, like last in India, were highly motivated to get latest insights of learning, new ideas for possible change of their poor daily situation. It was an awesome feeling to realize such a motivation by the youth, exceptionally in India, by absorbing the information like a dried-up sponge.
I think creativity is an essential source for innovative ideas that arise in the minds of passionate youth. Idea generation and their realization require not only endurance, perseverance and innovative actions but also unusual solutions. Therefore, the recognition, promotion and strengthening of creativity among children is of immense importance. That is the reason why we have to start the STEM-educational-support for youth early in the school to motivate them to become an inventor.
Therefore one of the IFIA-goals must be to support the youth and I will engage myself to continue this in the future.
