NOPORO: Evolving the Future of POP Application
IFIA Best Invention Medal was awarded to Professor Dr. Khin Maung Ohn @ Arif, orthopedic surgeon from the University of Sabah, Malaysia for the Novel POP Roller showcased in International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2018) which took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 10th-12th May 2018.
Plaster of Paris, or POP, is a common cast used in orthopedics for patients with fractures. As such, POP learning is a must in every undergraduate medical curriculum as it is an essential skill to master. However, current available POP does not have any handle, so the doctor has to hold and apply it with bare hands.
Improper techniques by inexperienced medical personnel will result in uneven application of POP, which can lead to pressure sores, gangrene or worse. Thus, Novel Pop Roller, or NOPORO, is innovated by Professor Dr. Khin Maung Ohn @ Arif to overcome the abovementioned problems.
Using paint roller principles, POP application is now made simple such that medical students or doctors just need to roll the POP around the fracture site, reducing unevenness and its resultant complications.
With NOPORO (Novel POP Roller), all medical professionals including students, medical assistants, nurses and doctors will find it:
- Easy to learn POP application
- Easy to use
- Easy to apply POP
- Reduced POP application complications
