Smart OPG: A milestone in Radiological Diagnosis

Panoramic radiography, (OPG) is a two-dimensional imaging method that ca. ptures upper and lower jaws in a single image, including the teeth, surrounding structures, and tissues. In routine dental practice, OPG is the first and common imaging modality to make diagnosis and treatment plans with the advantages of easy and fast performing, lower radiation dose, and cost. However, OPG does not provide precise and detailed information because of magnification, distortion, and superposition of anatomic structures. Also, the most current dental system operates with 8-bit images, which contain 28 =256 shades of grey. The human eye will be able to differentiate 60-80 shades of grey on a monitor. It is thought to be improved by intelligent manipulation of the grey values. So an artificial intelligence method, called smart OPG was developed to improve differentiating the grey values and eliminate these disadvantages. We believe that with today’s digital advancing technology smart OPG will be an important step in the radiological diagnosis.
Mehdi Bashiri was born in Urmia, Iran in 1992. He came to Istanbul for education in 2014. He began his education in dentistry at Istanbul Aydin University. He was the founder of the Istanbul Aydın University Innovation Club and served as the president. He made his first invention the same year and patented it.
Taking education from different universities and institutions in the field of bioengineering has given first inventing and innovation gifted children and gifted education in Turkey in this process over a thousand children who participated in this training.
In 2015, this invention was awarded the “Best Researcher Award” by the International Congress on Economic Cooperation Development on Health Focused on Islamic Countries.
