Sustainable Forest Initiative

How can we have the wood and paper products we need today while protecting the environment and ensuring that future generations have the same abundant resources?

The answer from America’s forestry professionals is the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)SM Program. The SFISM Program provides rigorous environmental standards and performance measures that integrate the protection of our environment with the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees.

The SFI program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist.

SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage. They also influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.

Sustainable forestry practices meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This includes practicing a land stewardship ethic that joins together the conservation of soil, air and water quality, wildlife and fish habitat, and aesthetics with the reforestation, managing, growing, nurturing and harvesting of trees for useful products.

The Sustainable Forestry InitiativeSM in Idaho

The Intermountain Forest Association, through its SFI Implementation Committee, is leading the implementation of SFI in Idaho. The Idaho SFI State Implementation Committee (SIC) activities are guided by a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). The other active SIC participants are forest resource companies, the Idaho Department of Lands, the Associated Logging Contractors, The University of Idaho Extension Office, and other members of the forestry community.

While forest products businesses in Idaho have a strong record of stewardship on their own land, the SFI Program provides the public with a verifiable system for assuring that all harvesting by SFI Program participants meets rigorous standards for environmental protection and sustainable forestry practices.
