IP & International Patent Protection Workshop in Iraq
International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) organized a training workshop on Intellectual Property and International Patent Protection in Iraq on February 28th, 2019 with the purpose of raising awareness on the international protection of inventions. This workshop was organized by Mr. Bijan Nasiri Azam, the manager of IFIA IP center, with the collaboration of “Iraqi Society of Inventors and Innovators” supported by Alketab University in Palestine Hotel, Baghdad.
This event was organized for the first time in Iraq and was supported by the minister of education and scientific research, Dr-Qusay-al-suhail. Many of the managers and officers in the ministry of education and research, as well as inventors and researchers took part in the event. Dr. Muneam Alshweely, the director of supervision and evaluation of private universities and Dr. Nabil Alaraji, the director of evaluation organization who attended the event on behalf of the minister of education and research were present in the workshop.
Initially, Dr. Nabil Alaraji welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of Intellectual Property rights and Patent, expressing: “This has a tremendous effect on the future of our country and constitutes the alphabet of progress for the modern societies. Furthermore, protection of inventions and Intellectual property is of immense importance and necessity”. He also stressed on putting into practice the outputs of this workshop in regards with the scientific achievements which play a key role in encouraging inventors and researchers and increases their scientific level.
The Director of Alketab University, Dr. Ayad Ghany Ismaeel, pointed out the attention this university pays to the intellectual property and informed the audience of the efforts made by the university to undertake its academic, educational, and social role in parallel with the intellectual property rights. While playing this role, legal and ethical functions for protecting the rights of inventors and innovators in the world, especially in Iraq, are enhanced. Particularly when Iraq is regarded as one of the leading countries of the world for benefiting from human resource who is able to create a revolution in the field of invention and innovation.
The president of “Iraqi Society of Inventors and Innovators”, Ms. Traiza Jasim Ridha, also indicated the importance of keeping up with the world advancements in regards with international treaties for protecting the rights of inventors and invited the participants to disseminate the culture of supporting intellectual property in the country.
The one-day workshop was organized in two sessions of morning and afternoon with the participation of the international expert “ Mr. Bijan Nasiri Azam ” as the main speaker. All of the questions posed by the audience were answered and finally all of the participants agreed on the important and scientific output of this workshop which will be submitted to the ministry of education and scientific research.
After examining the different parts of Intellectual Property and how they are protected, the practices to be taken by the Iraq government for the international protection of inventions belonging to Iraqi researchers was investigated due to the presence of the representative of the minister of education and scientific research of Iraq. Moreover, some proposals were provided about how to strengthen the database of Iraq Patent Office to promote the patented inventions in this database.
In the second session, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), the methods of protections, its advantages as well as the importance of Iraq’s membership in PCT was presented to the participants. Iraq has already joined Paris convention but it is not a member of PCT. Furthermore, teaching IP rights to the attorneys in Iraq universities is one the required infrastructures of this country.
The level of satisfaction of this workshop’s participants about the discussions provided on patent protection and scientific achievements was evaluated at the end of the workshop. The survey indicated that all of the participants were completely satisfied with both the scientific content of the program and the presentation by the Iranian expert.
